What happens to your business accounts if you become unavailable?

If you work for yourself and suddenly drop out, through illness, an accident or worse, usually nobody can carry on with your business. There is often a partner, colleague or accountant who would gladly help. They just do not know where everything is or how to get in.

Plenty of help, but nobody can get in

Think of your accounting software, business bank account, hosting, domain name, invoicing tool and client portals. All separate services with their own login. Without a list, even someone keen to help has no idea where to begin.

Meanwhile no invoices go out, client emails go unanswered and suppliers do not know who to turn to. That costs revenue, and over time it also costs the trust of people you have worked with for years.

What is usually missing

Goodwill is almost never the problem. What is usually missing is a full overview of your accounts and services. Often nobody has agreed who takes over, either. And nobody knows which client or payment comes first, and what can safely wait a few weeks.

How to set it up

For each account or service, write down what it is, what you use it for and what needs to happen if you are out of action for a while. Agree in advance who will pick it up, so that person does not have to guess later.

That does not mean handing everything over now. With PassMyBits you stay in control. Your trusted person first has to submit an activation request, and then a time lock runs. Until it has passed, you can cancel the request. So you get everything ready now, without anyone being able to get in straight away.

Things you can do today

  • Line up all your business accounts: accounting, bank, hosting, domain, client portals and subscriptions.
  • For each account, write down what needs to happen right away and what can wait.
  • Pick someone to receive this information when it is needed, and let them know.
  • Update the list whenever a client, supplier or service is added.
