Frequently asked questions

Answers about digital vaults, documents, end-to-end encryption, trustees, access, and subscriptions at PassMyBits.

1

Getting started

+What is PassMyBits?

PassMyBits is a secure digital vault for your digital legacy. You store passwords, documents, notes, and instructions in encrypted Passes (digital vaults) and decide for yourself whether and when trustees may access them.

+Who is PassMyBits for?

For anyone who wants to store documents and digital information securely and keep them organized. Sharing with family or business partners is optional.

+Is PassMyBits a legal will?

No. PassMyBits is a practical complement and does not provide legal or financial advice.

2

Security and privacy

+What does end-to-end encryption mean?

The contents of your Pass (digital vault) and your documents are made unreadable in your browser with AES-256 (AES-GCM) before they are sent to PassMyBits. The server only receives encrypted information. Without the encryption password, the content cannot be read. PassMyBits does not store this password, so it cannot read or recover the content for you.

+Can PassMyBits read or reset the passwords of my Pass (digital vault)?

No. Passwords and decryption keys for a Pass (digital vault) are not stored. If you lose them, the Pass (digital vault) cannot be recovered.

+Where is data stored?

Data is stored within the EEA with EU-based providers. See the Privacy Policy for details.

3

Passes (digital vaults) and content

+What is a Pass (digital vault)?

A Pass (digital vault) is a separate encrypted vault with its own password, settings, and trustees.

+Can I store documents in my Pass (digital vault)?

Yes. Alongside structured notes and passwords, you can upload documents and other files and link them to a topic, keeping the file and its related information in the same Pass (digital vault).

+How many Passes (digital vaults) can I create?

It depends on your plan; some plans allow unlimited Passes (digital vaults).

4

Trustees and access

+How does trustee access work?

You add a trustee and generate an access card (PDF). The trustee then needs 3 separate items: the PDF token, a trustee password that you choose yourself, and the existing encryption password of the Pass (digital vault). The trustee password starts the request. After the waiting period ends, the trustee must enter the token and trustee password again before the existing encryption password is used to open the contents of the Pass (digital vault).

+Do I have to add a trustee?

No. You can create, complete, and use a Pass (digital vault) without a trustee. Adding someone is optional. Without a trustee, no one can request access to that Pass (digital vault) through PassMyBits.

+Can I still give someone access later?

Yes. You can add a trustee to the Pass (digital vault) later. Only then do you set up an access route for that person.

+Can I add multiple trustees or change them later?

Yes. You can add multiple trustees, revoke access, or regenerate access cards at any time.

+What does PAUSE do?

PAUSE temporarily blocks all trustee access for your account. While PAUSE is active, trustees cannot activate or view any of your Passes (digital vaults), even if they have a valid token and passwords.

+Can I change the waiting period?

Yes. The creator of the Pass determines the duration of the timelock in advance and can update the number of hours in the settings of the Pass (digital vault). A trustee cannot change this duration.

5

Subscriptions and billing

+Is there a free trial?

If a trial is available for your plan, you will see the trial days in Pricing and in your account. Billing starts after the trial ends.

+How does billing work?

Plans are billed monthly or yearly, depending on the plan you choose. Payments are handled by Mollie and invoices are available in your account.

+Can I cancel?

Yes. You keep access until the end of the current billing period. After cancellation, data is retained up to 90 days and then removed.

+Why are new registrations currently limited to EU residents?

For now, we intentionally allow only new EU registrations because international tax and compliance rules are changing quickly across regions. This reduces legal uncertainty while we expand support country by country.

6

Account and support

+How do I reset my account password?

Use Forgot Password on the login page. Note: this does not reset the passwords of a Pass (digital vault).

+Can I enable 2FA and notifications?

Yes. Enable 2FA and push notifications in the Account Dashboard.

+How can I contact support?
