For families with children

What emergency information should your partner or children be able to find?

A will says who inherits what. It does not say who your child's GP is, where the health insurance policy is, or how your partner gets into the bank account to pay this month's bills. And that is exactly what is needed first.

Everyday life carries on

School, childminder, sports club, GP, dentist, insurance. It all carries on, even if you are suddenly not there to handle it. Your partner is left on their own and has no time to figure it all out.

When you are grieving or under stress, hunting for passwords, policy numbers and phone numbers is the last thing you need.

What your partner or child really needs

Think of the details for the GP, school and childcare, your insurance policies and banking. Also write down what matters about the children themselves, such as medication, allergies and who is allowed to collect them from school. And don't forget important email accounts and subscriptions.

Organizing it without one weak spot

A Word file or a note in a drawer is not encrypted, goes out of date quickly and often cannot be found at the very moment it is needed. It works better to spread the information over a few encrypted Passes (digital vaults), for example one for the family and one for finances.

Make your partner your trusted person. They can then get in through an activation request and a time lock. So not straight away, but not after weeks of searching either.

Things you can do today

  • Gather the details for the GP, school, childcare and insurance.
  • Write down what matters about the children: medication, allergies, who may collect them.
  • Note where your banking details and important policies can be found.
  • Make your partner a trusted person with their own access.
